During the winter months and specially because light has a shorter span, we never think about what happens underneath the surface. Yet as spring approaches, we are reminded that life is strong and lasting. Life comes back to tell us that that the story continues and maybe many springs later we will not be around to see the marvelous show of new colors and splendor.

Generations sometimes appear like winters and springs. During the 60’s, there was a time of questioning and rebelling against all that youth thought was against their freedom and their right to be themselves. Other later generations were more accommodating to the existing rules and the ones who once were against the system are now part of the social and economic construction that feels oppressive to the new generations.

The future is showing signs of hope and action towards solidarity and fairness. Lately I have had the opportunity to listen to different groups of young people from places as different as Goshen Indiana and Santo Domingo and both groups are reaching out to learn from others and creating a new identity.

The older generations may feel threatened by the presence and criticism from the younger ones, mostly because they are afraid to lose what has been achieved and accumulated throughout the years. The question remains: What was lost while acquiring the material things that they now possess.

Most individuals in the Western Hemisphere have accepted the philosophy of consumerism that makes us invest all our time and energy into ‘having more’ in order to feel that we ‘are more’. That same philosophy has been exported as ‘development’ to the Third World countries, and suddenly the notion of wealth and poverty became inverted everywhere.

Even though the raw materials and fossil energy are from the Third World, it is the ‘first world’ that is setting the prices, the exchange and the manner in which business is done.

In order to be part of such development, the young people must attend school for 12 years. They then go to college for four more, probably to master English and Arts. They will get ready to sell dreams and provide ‘services;’ in other words, they will become part of a society detached from the products they sell. People become disposable, and after 20 years the person is not quite sure what his/her role in society has been.

The young people, on the other hand, are claiming their right to think and express their thoughts through art and deed. The first step in that direction is that they establish groups and relate to each other as family/friends/checkpoints/mentors. The youth are looking for new ways to learn without repeating the same thing year after year. They have the energy and enthusiasm to work harder and not be afraid to make mistakes.

I encourage everyone to work in an intergenerational environment where each one has something to learn from others.

As I said before, spring is arriving. Viva la vida!!

 

En Español

 Durante los meses de invierno y especialmente porque el lapso de luz es más corto, nunca pensamos acerca de qué está pasando bajo la superficie y cuando llega la primavera recordamos que la vida es fuerte y duradera. La vida vuelve para decirnos que continúa y que tal vez dentro de muchas primaveras no estaremos para ver el maravilloso espectáculo de nuevos colores y esplendor.

A veces las generaciones parecen como inviernos y primaveras. Durante los años 60, hubo un fuerte tiempo de cuestionamiento y rebeldía contra todo lo que la juventud de esa época pensaba que estaba en contra de su libertad y el derecho a ser ellos mismos. Otras generaciones posteriores se acomodaron más a las reglas existentes y aquellos que una vez estuvieron en contra del sistema son ahora parte de la construcción social y económica que las nuevas generaciones consideran opresivas.

El futuro está ahora dando señales de esperanza y acción hacia la solidaridad y la justicia. Ultimamente he tenido la oportunidad de escuchar a diversos grupos de gente joven provenientes de lugares tan distintos como Goshen, Indiana y Santo Domingo y ambos grupos están haciendo un esfuerzo por llegar a otros y aprender de ellos mientras forjan una nueva identidad.

Las generaciones de más edad se pueden sentir amenazadas por la crítica y presencia de los más jóvenes, en su mayoría es porque temen perder lo que han logrado y acumulado a través de los años. La pregunta es qué se perdió mientras adquirían todas las cosas que poseen.

La mayoría de los individuos en el hemisferio occidental han aceptado una filosofía del consumismo que nos hace invertir todo nuestro tiempo y energía en ‘tener más’ a fin de sentir que ‘somos más’. Esta misma filosofía ha sido exportada como ‘desarrollo’ a los países del tercer mundo y de repente la noción de riqueza y pobreza se han invertido en todo lugar.

Aunque la materia prima y los fósiles que proveen la energía provienen del tercer mundo, es el ‘primer mundo’ el que fija los precios, el intercambio y la forma en que los negocios se realizan.

A fin de ser parte de tal desarrollo, la gente joven tiene que asistir a la escuela por 12 años, después cuatro más de Universidad y probablemente mejorar en ingles y ‘artes’. En realidad, se están preparando para vender sueños y proveer ‘servicios’; en otras palabras, ellos se convertirán en parte de una sociedad alejada de los productos que venden. La gente se vuelve desechable y después de 20 años la persona no está muy segura de cuál ha sido su papel en esta sociedad.

De otra parte, la gente joven está reclamando su derecho a pensar y expresar sus pensamientos a través de arte y obras. El primer paso en esa dirección es que han establecido grupos donde se relacionan entre sí como familia/amigos/puntos de chequeo/mentores. La juventud está buscando nuevas formas de aprender sin repetir la misma cosa año tras año. Ellos cuentan con la energía y entusiasmo para trabajar más duro y no tener miedo de cometer errores.

Yo los animo a todos a que participemos en medios intergeneracionales donde cada uno puede aprender de los otros.

Como dije antes la primavera llegará. Viva la vida!!

Zulma is so right when she calls out for combining the enthusiasm of youth with the wisdom of age by creating more opportunities for intergenerational dialogues. We can learn so much from each other.

I have the good fortune to be living in a senior community. There are dozens of people here whose lives have been broadened by decades of work and travel, who have had both good fortune and bad, who weathered the Great Depression and major international conflicts but were also successful in business and in raising families. They have so much that they could pass on to young people.

By the same token, those who are called the Millennials, the young folks in their late teens and early 20’s, are creatures of an electronic environment. They seem to have been born with a mouse (computer kind) in their hands. Many have increased their critical thinking skills via computer games and surfed the Web to touch the wonders found in cultures throughout the world. They also have things they could pass on to older people in order to help them take advantage of the same experiences.

Zulma takes exception with the philosophy of consumerism that has taken over the world, in her perception. While this is obvious to anyone who views commercials on television or sees video clips of polluted Chinese cities that have sprung 60 story apartment buildings where rice fields stood a decade ago, let’s not confuse consumerism with economic growth. Market economies reflect the collective choices of millions of people. It’s not that we need to reign in the number of choices we make; the secret rests with the choices we choose. Production rests on how we combine three general factors. In economic terms these are land (raw materials), labor (human resources), and capital (machines). The objective is to have businesses combine these as efficiently as they can to produce the goods and services people desire. What we need to do is to change our priorities from filling our collective stomachs to overflowing to producing goods and services that allow for a more equitable distribution of those factors of production.

We are on the brink of an explosion in technology. We are seeing the start of dramatic procedures that could extend human life well beyond 100 years. We should soon be able to increase human intelligence more than a million times beyond what it is today. Space travel could become as commonplace as air travel is today. These wonders must become available throughout the world and to everyone. To make these dreams a reality will take combining the wisdom of older generations with the enthusiasm and skills of youth. Let’s get started moving in that direction.

Zulma tiene toda la razón cuando hace el llamado a combinar el entusiasmo de la juventud con la sabiduría de la edad creando más oportunidades de diálogos intergeneracionales, así podemos aprender mucho unos de otros.
Tengo la Buena suerte d vivir en una comunidad de gente de edad. Hay docenas de personas allí cuyas vidas se han ampliado por décadas por el trabajo y los viajes, que además pasaron por la Gran Depresión e importantes conflictos internacionales pero también tuvieron éxito en los negocios y en levantar sus familias. Ellos tienen mucho que pasarles a la gente joven.
De igual manera aquellos llamados los Milenios, los jóvenes en la adolescencia o en sus veintes, son criaturas de en medio electrónico. Ellos parecen haber nacido con un ratón (de computador) en sus manos. Muchos han aumentados sus habilidad crítica por medio de los juegos de computador y de haber podido navegar en la red entrando en contacto con culturas de todo el mundo. Ellos también tienen cosas para pasarle a la gente mayor a fin de ayudarles a tomar ventaja de esas mismas experiencias.
Zulma toma la excepción de la filosofía del consumismo que según su percepción se ha adueñado del mundo. Aunque es obvio para cualquiera que vea las propagandas en televisión o los video clips que contaminan las ciudades chinas en donde los edificios de departamentos de 60 pisos han reemplazado los lugares donde hace una década se veían solo sembradíos de arroz. No confundamos el consumismo con el crecimiento económico. Las economías de Mercado reflejan la selección colectiva de millones de personas. No es que tengamos que reinar en el número de selecciones que hacemos, el secreto yace en lo que escogemos. La producción descansa en la forma en que combinamos tres factores generales. En términos económicos estos son la tierra
( materiales brutos), el trabajo ( recursos humanos) y el capital ( las máquinas) El objetivo es tener negocios que combinen estos en forma tan eficiente que puedan producir los bienes y servicios deseados por la gente. Lo que tenemos que hacer es cambiar nuestras prioridades de llenar nuestros estómagos colectivos hasta sobrepasarnos y tener la producción de bienes y servicios que permitan una distribución más equitativa de esos factores de la producción.
Estamos a punto de tener una explosión tecnológica. Estamos viendo el comienzo de procedimientos dramáticos que pueden extender la vida humana más allá de los 100 años. Pronto podremos aumentar la inteligencia humana más de un millón de veces de lo que existe hoy en día. Los viajes espaciales pueden convertirse tan usuales como lo son hoy los viajes aéreos. Estas maravillas deben estar disponibles en todo el mundo y para cada uno. Hacer que estos sueños se tornen realidad, tomará el combinar la sabiduría de las generaciones mayores con el entusiasmo y habilidades de la juventud. Empecemos a movernos en esa dirección.
